Top 10 Reasons to Start Your Own Home Based Business

This post is written to show what I consider to be the Top 10 Reasons to start your own home based business.

You certainly don’t need this blog to explain that there are a lot of changes happening in the world, today. Corporate layoffs continue at an alarming rate. The idea of “Job Security” is rapidly becoming a distant memory. It’s not all bad news, though. More and more people are discovering the benefits of starting and operating a home based business. There can be any number of reasons for starting your own home based business.

Take Your Life Back: If you’ve traditionally worked a job that required long commute times, the time savings alone can be a huge motivator for starting your own home based business. In my own case, I used to drive an hour to work in the morning and another hour home at night. That’s 2 additional hours out of my life every single day! Over the course of 50 weeks (allowing 2 weeks for vacation), I was giving up 500 hours of my life every single year! That’s essentially like wasting 2 months worth of work time every single year!

Make Yourself Rich: Have you ever really done an outstanding job for your boss? Maybe you put in those extra hours to meet that ridiculous deadline, or stayed late to correct some goofy mistakes made by your co-workers or even your boss. When the company got those extra orders, or closed that big contract, who made all that exta money? Not you! Your boss! When you operate your own home based business, the money you make is yours to decide what to do with. You may put that money in your pocket or back in to your business, but the important thing is: YOU get to choose what to do with the money YOU earned!

Personal Satisfaction: Starting your own home based business can give you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment like no other. The creative thinking, motivation to act, and discipline to follow through can help you realize just how powerful you truly are. And that’s a feeling that can’t be bought!

Reduced Risk: Compare the costs of opening a traditional brick and mortar business, a franchise, etc.. to the cost of opening a small business from home, and the cost savings can be substantial. Typical franchise opportunities can start at tens of thousands of dollars and go well in to the millions of dollars. Starting a business from home, such as a network marketing distributorship can reduce those startup expenses to hundreds of dollars.

Tax Advantages: There are a LOT of tax advantages when you start your own home based business from your home. Consult with your tax professional for details in your area, but possibilities include being able to deduct a percentage of your mortgage, phone lines, internet access, computers, supplies, travel, postage, advertising, etc…

More “FREE” Time: The concept of whether “free time” is really “free” will be a topic for another post but the idea here is that your home based business can give you more time to spend with your family, friends, or just things you enjoy doing such as hobbies. Remember that 2 hours a day you used to give up commuting to and from your job? Imagine being able to spend those hours having dinner with a loved one, playing games with your kids, attending your childrens’ sporting events or school functions … or just sitting and enjoying a quiet moment. The freedom to decide how you spend your time is a powerful motivator for starting and running a home based business in my book.

Reduced Stress (maybe): I say “maybe” because while you are no longer facing some of the traditional stresses associated with a job as an employee, you now face the new stress of being responsible for the success of your business. For myself, I much prefer the stress of being the “boss” over the stress of working for and creating wealth for someone that may or may not be worth the effort. Life will still happen, of course. And you will have to make decisions, prioritize your time, and make sure you are getting the desired results. But when things do come up (and they will), it’s much easier to walk away from your desk at home than to ask permission of a boss or manager. Knowing you are available to handle life’s challenges with your family can be a powerful stress reliever.

Personal Development: The challenges of owning your own business create amazing opportunities for self development as you learn to manage the multiple roles of manager, sales director, organizer, marketing professional, strategist, project manager, and more. The experience of managing these roles is worth a Harvard MBA over time and if you want to attend seminars, classes, or read books on various business and personal development approaches, you can!

Increased Productivity: You control your time when you own your own business. You can focus on the things that are important, skip redundant meetings and time-wasting peers. You decide how to spend your time. Typically, running your own home based business will give you a lot more time and energy to create your success.

Pursue Your Passions: Launching your home based business can be a great way for you to feed your passions, scratch your creative itch, and make money at the same time. While it’s true that money can’t buy you happiness, it’s safe to say that the money you make in your home based business can allow you to pursue your passions and do the things that DO make you happy. It’s hard to not be happy when you’re packing for a Hawaiian vacation to celebrate the success of your own business!
